Soccer paradise in The Netherlands

The Netherlands punches above its weight when it comes to soccer — better known around the world as football — and for visiting fans, it offers the rare chance to walk through the actual places where the modern game was reimagined.

Amsterdam

Start in the capital at the Johan Cruijff Arena, the 55,000-seat home of AFC Ajax and a frequent host for the Dutch national team. Beyond Ajax matches, it hosts international games, concerts, and other major events, and its retractable roof keeps things comfortable regardless of the weather. On non-matchdays, stadium tours grant access to the Ajax dressing rooms, the players' tunnel, the pitch, the manager's dugout, and the Ajax Gallery of Fame Museum; VIP tours include the boardroom and a drink in the Sky Lounge. A bronze statue of a footballer stands outside the stadium, alongside a massive banner bearing the image of the man whose name the arena bears.

While there isn't a dedicated "Cruyff house" museum open to the public, fans can still trace his footsteps through Amsterdam's De Pijp and East neighborhoods, near where Ajax's old De Meer stadium once stood — the ground where Cruyff made his name before the club moved to the ArenA in 1996.

The heart of Oranje: KNVB Campus in Zeist

About 45 minutes southeast of Amsterdam, tucked into the forests near Zeist, sits the KNVB Campus (Royal Dutch Football Association) — the training and preparation base for every Dutch national team. Opened 10 years ago and partly funded by UEFA and FIFA, it has become the central point of Dutch football.

Public tours run on the first Sunday of every month (with extra Wednesday tours in summer), lasting about 90 minutes and giving visitors access to the same training pitches, gyms, dining hall, and even player sleeping quarters used by the senior squad.

Combine this with a visit to the nearby city of Utrecht, less than 15 minutes away by train, to explore the historic canals and city center, and even take in the soccer atmosphere around FC Utrecht and their Stadion Galgenwaard.

Rotterdam

Rotterdam offers its own footballing draw at Feyenoord's iconic De Kuip stadium, one of Europe's most atmospheric grounds and a regular Eredivisie and European fixture venue, with stadium tours available on non-matchdays. The city's compact size means fans can easily combine a stadium visit with Rotterdam's striking modern architecture around the harbor.

Planning your trip

The Netherlands' compact size and excellent rail network make it possible to combine Amsterdam, Utrecht/Zeist, and Rotterdam in a single week-long itinerary: stadium tours by day, café culture and canals by evening. For fans of Total Football's birthplace, this is as close as it gets to a living museum of the sport.
