The Smetana’s Litomyšl festival is the second oldest music festival in the Czech Republic, and at the same time, it is among the largest regular classical music festivals held in the country. A musical experience in Litomyšl, the birthplace of the founder of Czech national music, Bedřich Smetana.
The most famous native of Litomyšl, composer Bedřich Smetana, is celebrated every summer with a big music festival. Dating from 1949, it is the second oldest music festival in the Czech Republic. The main program consists of opera productions, concert versions of operas, gala concerts, oratorios, cantatas, and songbook evenings, but the varied program also offers ballet, church, and promenade concerts or forms that overlap other genres. The center of festival events is the magnificent Litomyšl Renaissance château with a covered courtyard and unique theater, registered as a UNESCO site.
