Gernika Market

The stars of the marketplace are the baserritarras (local farmers) and their products, which are displayed on some 900 stalls placed in central streets such as San Juan Ibarra, Paseleku, Artekale and Juan Calzada. Among the main attractions are the numerous contests in the different categories of produce, such as vegetables, fruits, flowers, cheeses, txakolí (local wine) and honey.

The jury judges the produce early in the morning, and after that, the stallholders can proceed to sell their products. The prizes are awarded at midday in front of the fountain to Mercury.

Next to the market there are also street entertainments and performances by bertsolaris (Basque street musicians). Although the market ends at about 2pm, the festive atmosphere continues through the afternoon.
