Taste Serbia along the Danube

Follow the Danube through Serbia and you can taste the landscape as you go: river fish in the north, vineyard lunches around Fruška Gora and wines made in villages where generations still share the same cellars. Come hungry, leave time to talk to the people behind the food and let the river lead you from one regional flavour to the next.

Taste the Danube in Apatin and Bezdan

Around Apatin and Bezdan, the Danube has always shaped what arrives at the table. Start with riblji paprikaš, a spicy fish paprikash traditionally prepared with freshwater fish and plenty of paprika, or try grilled and fried river fish in a local čarda – the characteristic riverside restaurants of this part of Serbia.

The setting is part of the meal. Find a table near the water, order slowly and experience a food culture closely connected to fishing, wetlands and everyday Danube life.

Sip and taste in Sremski Karlovci

Surrounded by the vineyards of Fruška Gora, Sremski Karlovci is one of Serbia's historic wine towns. Its signature is Bermet, an aromatic wine flavoured with herbs and spices, alongside the area's historic dessert-wine tradition, including Ausbruch-style wines.

Visit a family cellar, then pair your tasting with local cakes and desserts in the Baroque town centre. This is a place to take your time: wine here comes with family stories and generations of local knowledge.

Spend a farm-to-table day around Novi Sad

Use Novi Sad as a starting point for a day built around local producers. Cross the Danube toward Fruška Gora, where vineyards, orchards, farms and villages sit among the forested hills.

Taste local cheeses, cured meats, honey and seasonal produce, stop at a winery for lunch and look for menus built around ingredients grown nearby. Add a farmers' market in Novi Sad and the experience becomes a simple journey from market stall and farm to vineyard table.

Follow the grapes to Smederevo

Downstream from Belgrade, Smederevo brings the Danube together with another long wine-growing tradition. Vineyards spread across the surrounding hills, and the region is closely associated with Smederevka, a local white grape variety producing fresh, approachable wines.

Meet a local winemaker, taste Smederevka where it grows and combine the experience with Smederevo's Danube setting and historic fortress. Around harvest time, grapes become part of the rhythm of the entire region.

Step Into the wine villages of Negotin

Farther east, near the borders with Romania and Bulgaria, the Negotin wine region offers one of Serbia's most distinctive wine experiences. At Rajac and Rogljevo, stone wine cellars known as pivnice form entire villages built for making and storing wine.

Walk between the old stone buildings, meet local producers and taste wines made from regional grapes. The experience feels personal rather than polished – and that is precisely its appeal.

By this point, the Danube has carried you from northern Serbia almost to its eastern border. Keep following it and the food, wines and languages change again, while the river continues toward the Black Sea.
