Slovakia’s iconic rail routes

Travel is not only about discovering new places or counting the number of countries visited. Sometimes the greatest experience is the journey itself. The ways we move across landscapes have long fascinated travelers — remarkable feats of engineering that blend naturally with the surrounding scenery. Iconic railways, historic stations and striking bridges are a dream for photographers and a living testament to the ingenuity of past generations.

Slovakia’s history is closely intertwined with rail travel. One of its most charming symbols is the Čiernohronská Railway in Čierny Balog village, in the Horehronie region. This historic narrow-gauge railway once carried timber from deep forest valleys. Today it offers a delightful journey for families, railway enthusiasts and lovers of history.

For something truly unusual, try the Horehronie Rail Bicycles. These unique pedal-powered bikes run along railway tracks and begin the new season on 1 May 2026. A special highlight this year are the Saturday evening rides, when you can enjoy the romance of sunset and the quiet beauty of the night sky far from city lights.

Travelers seeking the perfect blend of engineering and nature can board the scenic Horehronie Express. Its route crosses two of Slovakia’s most photographed railway structures — the graceful Chmarošský Viaduct and the impressive Telgárt Viaduct, both set among dramatic mountain landscapes.

Slovakia is also home to several architecturally remarkable railway stations. One of the most beautiful is in Kežmarok town. Built at the beginning of the 20th century in the then-fashionable Art Nouveau style, the station still captivates visitors with decorative natural motifs, elegant ornamentation and colorful stained glass. The impressive building has recently undergone a complete restoration.

While in Kežmarok, don’t miss the extraordinary Wooden Articular Evangelical Church in Kežmarok. Often called the “little Sistine Chapel of Spiš”, this remarkable wooden sanctuary is among Slovakia’s most precious monuments and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.

Another fascinating story belongs to the Trenčianska Electric Railway, also referred to as TREŽ, one of the oldest electrified lines in Slovakia. For nearly 120 years this narrow-gauge railway has connected Trenčianska Teplá village with the spa town of Trenčianske Teplice. From May to the end of August, a historic tram runs here on weekends, taking visitors on a nostalgic ride through the countryside. An essential part of its charm is the historic depot, home to a small transport museum.

A visit to Trenčianske Teplice is also an opportunity to explore one of Slovakia's oldest and most popular spa destinations. Within the spa complex stands an architectural gem – the Hammam Bath House, built in an exotic Moorish style.
