A living testament to how tourism can revive local traditions and strengthen local communities is the Lišov Museum, located in the heart of the Hont region in central Slovakia. Since its establishment in 2015, the museum has been dedicated to restoring local cultural heritage, from a traditional Lišov stone house and a replica of a Celtic dwelling to the restoration of a historic house dating back to 1887. Local residents and visitors alike are actively involved in the process, while local craftspeople and farmers benefit from the initiative. Another unique attraction is the Mask Gallery, an extraordinary collection featuring more than 400 masks from around the world. An important aspect of the project, however, is the museum's international volunteering and educational program. The ambition is to create a vibrant community space to connect tourism with education, heritage restoration, and community development.
Volunteer work is also helping to breathe new life into Tematín Castle, a medieval hilltop fortress overlooking the Váh River Valley in western Slovakia. Since 2007, a local civic association, in cooperation with the international organization European Heritage Volunteers, has been bringing students and young professionals from across the world to participate in the castle's preservation. During summer courses, volunteers actively contribute to conservation work and gain valuable hands-on experience.
