Slovakia’s Dark Sky Park

Do you long for original experiences and less visited places where untouched nature, rare heritage, and a true tranquility come together? This summer, set out for Muránska Planina National Park, a hidden treasure in the heart of the country. One of Slovakia’s nine national parks, its wild landscapes will provide you with unforgettable adventures.

Slow down, let the atmosphere of this place unfold, and Muránska Planina will reward you. It reveals the beauty of the night sky, rare species of plants and animals, and invites you to feel truly part of the kingdom of nature that has preserved its originality and unique character.

A remarkable part of the park is the Dark Sky Park, a protected area for stargazing with minimal light pollution. Leave urban glare behind and step into deep, natural darkness, where the surrounding world takes on a different dimension. Here, far from the glow of civilization, you can admire breathtaking views of the Milky Way, distant planets, and shooting stars. All you need to do is look up, and you’ll find yourself beneath millions of shining stars.

You can explore the night sky during organized stargazing events led by astronomers, some of whom offer guidance in English. For those drawn to adventure, simply bring a tent, immerse yourself in the mysteries of the universe and experience the beauty of the night sky firsthand:

  • In summer, stargazing events take place all around Slovakia (reservations are required).
  • New locations, Nemcová and Predná hora, now feature Stargazing Living Rooms — oversized wooden outdoor seating designed for comfortable night sky observation.
  • Muránska Planina also offers stunning natural scenery and rich biodiversity.
  • At Veľká lúka (the Great Meadow), you may encounter the powerful Norik Muráň horses. These semi-wild animals roam freely across the surrounding meadows during the summer months, and watching their untamed grace is a truly memorable experience. Horse enthusiasts can also enjoy carriage rides pulled by Norik horses or explore over 200 kilometers of brand-new official riding trails.

A closer connection with wildlife awaits at Biele vody ground squirrel site, where you can observe European ground squirrels in their natural habitat and even feed them by hand. Curious and friendly, these small animals delight visitors of all ages.  Nearby, the Obrovisko family park features giant wooden sculptures, a panoramic bench overlooking Muránska Planina, and a 12-meter wooden statue of the guardian Bojan — the largest wooden statue in Europe.

Muránska Planina holds many stories. Its landmark is the medieval Muráň Castle, the third-highest-elevation castle in Slovakia. You can experience its historic atmosphere during the traditional Muráň Castle Games festival held at the end of June. If you set out from the village of Muráň, be sure to taste Muráň buns, traditional, jam-filled sweet dough treats.
