Part of a European Cultural Route in Croatia

Among the 17 European cultural routes that pass through Croatia, the Route of Historic Thermal Towns showcases historically significant thermal baths and spa traditions. Since ancient times, thermal springs have been used therapeutically, the zenith of their popularity occurring from the 18th-19th centuries. Many cities continue this tradition with festivals, events, and other activities around the benefits of thermal waters. The Croatian cities on this spa route are Daruvar, Lipik, and Varaždinske Toplice. 

Daruvar

The Daruvar Thermal Spar, in central Croatia, lies in a beautiful park, offering visitors a lovely opportunity to rejuvenate in thermal pools rich in minerals. Daruvar’s water is known for its healing properties, particularly for musculoskeletal and rheumatic issues. The spa facilities include indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, and various wellness treatments. 

Beyond its famous spa, Daruvar is a charming town rich in cultural heritage. Daruvar Castle, a striking baroque structure surrounded by a park, is a testament to the town’s history. Visitors can explore the well-preserved castle grounds, which often host cultural events. Picturesque Papuk Nature Park nearby is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering hiking trails and stunning vistas. 

Lipik

Lipik is famous for its Lipik Thermal Spa, where thermal water high in mineral content is renowned for its therapeutic benefits, particularly for skin and joint conditions. Visitors can immerse themselves in the soothing effects of the waters through various wellness treatments and spa services. The Lipik Thermal Spa is surrounded by greenery and provides a tranquil, relaxing environment. 

Lipik also invites visitors to explore its captivating natural surroundings. Lipik Park, a lush green oasis, is perfect for leisurely strolls. Another highlight is the Lipizzaner stud farm, known for breeding the elegant horses. The Lipik Museum offers insights into the town’s history, while the beautiful St. Francis Church adds to the cultural allure. 

Varaždinske Toplice

Varaždinske Toplice, in northern Croatia, has been known for its thermal springs since Roman times. The town’s Terme Varaždin thermal spa offers modern wellness facilities amidst preserved historical aspects. Its waters, rich in calcium and magnesium, provide multiple health benefits. Visitors can enjoy thermal pools, saunas, and wellness treatments in a serene setting, making Varaždinske Toplice a destination for both relaxation and therapeutic experiences. 

The nearby Old Town of Varaždin is a well-preserved baroque gem of historic buildings, museums, and charming squares. Varaždin Cemetery considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, is an intriguing blend of art and history. The town also has a  vibrant cultural scene, with  festivals and events happening throughout the year.  

Exploring cultural routes and thermal towns not only provides a glimpse into history and traditions but also contributes to the ongoing narrative of a shared European identity.
