Explore a welcoming, inclusive destination

Vacationing in Portugal, whether visiting cities or relaxing by the seaside, is accessible to everyone. Its excellent climate, diverse attractions, fascinating heritage and short distances between points of interest make it easy to explore, from the lush islands of the Azores and Madeira to the vineyards of the Douro Valley, UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Center of Portugal, the vibrant Lisboa Region, the Alentejo plains, and the sunny Algarve. The country is committed to inclusivity, ensuring that all travelers, regardless of their needs, can enjoy its beauty and diversity with the warmth and hospitality that define the Portuguese spirit.

In 2019, Portugal became the first country to receive the Accessible Tourism Destination award from the World Tourism Organization (WTO), a testament to its dedication to making tourism inclusive. Initiatives such as the All for All program have created accessible travel routes across the country, providing information on attractions, transportation, and safe travel options for everyone. Visitors can more easily explore iconic landmarks, museums, and historic sites thanks to these carefully designed itineraries.

Portugal’s hotel offer encompasses a variety of accommodations, from luxury resorts to rural retreats, with rooms adapted for travelers with special requirements. Visitors are encouraged to contact hotels directly to confirm specific accessibility features, such as step-free entrances, accessible bathrooms, and elevator access. Additionally, all Portuguese airports are equipped with specially adapted facilities, including MyWay, a personalized assistance service for passengers with reduced mobility.

Accessible transport options help travelers explore Portugal, including adapted metro and bus services in major cities, accessible taxis equipped with boarding platforms and safety features, and a centralized Integrated Mobility Service (SIM) provided by Comboios de Portugal, which assists train passengers with special needs. Visitors can also access accessible car rentals and parking spaces, including permits for EU disabled permit holders.

Portugal’s coastline and rivers are a major highlight, boasting more than 240 accessible beaches. Identified by a white flag with the blue and yellow Accessible Beach symbol, these locations are equipped with reserved parking, wooden walkways, adapted toilet and shower facilities, and equipment such as amphibious wheelchairs, making it possible for those with mobility challenges to enjoy the water safely.

With its welcoming spirit, the right resources, and a commitment to accessibility, Portugal ensures that every traveler, whether exploring historic cities, relaxing on accessible beaches, or enjoying its rich culinary traditions, can feel at home. It’s the perfect destination for creating unforgettable memories, regardless of one’s needs or abilities. We look forward to welcoming you!
