Taste Croatia’s Danube

Follow the Danube through eastern Croatia and discover a food culture shaped by vineyards, fertile fields and the river itself. From Baranja to Erdut and Ilok, meet local winemakers, taste traditional dishes and slow down over meals made with ingredients grown close to home.

Taste Baranja’s wine country

In Baranja, vineyards rise between the Danube and Drava, while villages such as Zmajevac and Suza are known for wine cellars dug into the hillsides. Follow the local wine roads, meet small producers and taste regional wines where the grapes are grown. Explore more with the official Visit Baranja.

Food is equally important here. Try Baranjski kulen, a paprika-spiced cured sausage, and fiš paprikaš, the region’s rich freshwater fish stew. In Suza, fish stew and local wine remain part of everyday village food culture.

Follow the vineyards to Erdut

Continue downstream to Erdut, where vineyards overlook a broad bend in the Danube. The local wine road links family wineries, rural households and viewpoints above the river, making it easy to combine tastings with a slow journey through the landscape. Discover the official Erdut Wine Road.

Local tables draw on homegrown produce, freshwater fish, cured meats, cheeses and seasonal ingredients. Pair them with Erdut wines and the experience becomes a relaxed introduction to Slavonian hospitality.

Step into Ilok’s historic cellars

At Croatia’s eastern edge, Ilok has one of the country’s longest wine traditions. Begin at the historic Old Cellars of Ilok, built beneath the Odescalchi estate and still used today, then continue through the town’s wineries and surrounding vineyards.

The official Ilok Wine Road makes it easy to combine cellar visits, wine tastings and local food within a compact area.

Dine among the vines at Principovac

Above Ilok, Principovac offers a more refined finish to the journey. Walk through the vineyards, enjoy views toward the Danube and pair award-winning local wines with dishes built around seasonal and homegrown ingredients.

Fine dining here does not leave local tradition behind; it gives familiar regional flavours a contemporary setting. From the vineyards, the Danube continues toward Serbia, carrying the culinary journey into another country and another set of local tastes.
