Tampere – 2026 European Capital of Smart Tourism
by
European Capital & Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism
Tampere, the second-largest city in Finland, is loved by locals, yet is still undiscovered by international travelers. This means that visitors can enjoy calm and authentic experiences in the city and its surrounding nature. This year, Tampere was awarded the European Capital of Smart Tourism title, highlighting the city as a frontrunner in sustainable and inclusive tourism. Discover what the city has to offer!
Sauna like a Finn
Tampere is the Sauna Capital of the World, awarded the title in 2018. With over 70 public saunas in the region, the city has the most public saunas in Finland, including the oldest public sauna still operating in Finland, the Rajaportti sauna, which has been operating since 1906. Visitors can enjoy many unforgettable sauna experiences in Tampere. Why not visit the Sauna Restaurant Kuuma to enjoy a traditional sauna and sample Nordic cuisine at the same time? Looking for something more unique? You can combine sauna and art at the Serlachius Art & Sauna, experience the traditional smoke sauna at Niemi-Kapee, enjoy a sauna ceremony in a yurt-style Sauna Temple, or rent a sauna all to yourself. The possibilities for relaxation are endless.
Explore nature and the city in a sustainable way
In Tampere, the love for sauna is connected to the love for nature. Here, stunning lakes, forests, and green spaces are just moments away from the city center. The Outdoor Express shuttle service links the city center with the region’s national parks, offering convenient access to the great outdoors for everyone, regardless of their physical abilities. One of the best ways to experience the surrounding nature is by following the ‘Lake Trails’, which offer a variety of cycling routes through the beautiful Finnish countryside. You can choose the length of your trip and combine it with a fun boat ride or stay at one of the countryside farmhouses or cottages for a real authentic experience.
Tampere is committed to protecting its natural sites, but its sustainability efforts extend beyond this. The city aims to grow sustainably and become carbon neutral by 2030. One of the key initiatives supporting this goal is the ‘Think Sustainably’ program, which encourages local businesses to adopt sustainable practices and embrace a climate-friendly future. Visitors can discover green hotels, restaurants, shops and attractions, and support the initiative by choosing sustainable options during the visit.
Moomins and unique city culture
The world’s only Moomin Museum awaits you in Tampere. What are the Moomins? They are charming and whimsical characters created by the author and illustrator Tove Jansson. The stories focus on themes like friendship, respect for nature, equality, tolerance, freedom and courage, which are still relevant today and have become ingrained in Tampere and Finnish culture. The museum houses an important collection of original drawings, paintings and creations by the Moomin author. Discover the importance of these creatures and you may have the key to understanding Finnish culture!
