What if you could leave a destination better than you found it? In Slovenia, this idea is shaping the future of tourism.
Discover Slovenia's green story
The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism is a comprehensive national initiative that brings together destinations and tourism businesses committed to more sustainable development under the Slovenia Green label .
Today, almost 300 destinations, accommodation providers, restaurants, attractions, travel agencies and other tourism businesses are members of the Slovenia Green family, creating a nationwide network dedicated to making tourism more responsible, resilient, and beneficial for both local communities and the environment.
Green stories in action
The Slovenia green story is a mosaic of places and people putting sustainability into practice. Leading the way are the six Slovenian Green Platinum destinations — Bohinj, Laško, Ljubljana, Brežice, Kranj, and Velenje — which represent the highest level of commitment within the scheme. The green story reaches much further: with 13% of Slovenia's territory protected, Slovenia Green-certified natural parks help safeguard exceptional biodiversity and cultural landscapes, while green lodging, restaurants, attractions, and travel agencies make responsible choices part of the visitor experience.
From local produce to positive impact
Slovenia Green-certified restaurants prioritize fresh, seasonal, and locally sourced ingredients, often working directly with nearby farmers and producers or growing ingredients in their own gardens. The impact goes beyond reducing food miles. Short supply chains support small-scale producers, help preserve agricultural land, traditional knowledge, and strengthen the connection between Slovenian cuisine and its place of origin.
Reducing food waste is increasingly important, to use resources more efficiently — turning the dining table into another point of connection between traveler, community and landscape.
Cycling with a green mission
Four Slovenian green cycling routes connect certified destinations and tourism providers to tell the country's green story from the saddle. Bike Slovenia Green, the world's first cycling tour to connect destinations exclusively with the Slovenia Green certification, is joined by the Slovenia Green Gourmet Route, pairing cycling with sustainable gastronomy; the Slovenia Green Capitals Escape Route, linking sustainably certified destinations; and the Slovenia Green Wellness Route, combining cycling with Slovenia's thermal spa culture.
From lower impact to lasting value
Together, these green stories point towards an increasingly regenerative approach to travel: one that not only seeks to reduce negative impacts, but encourages visitors and tourism providers to contribute positively to the places they value. By protecting nature and heritage, supporting local communities, and choosing more responsible ways to explore, tourism can help preserve Slovenia's green story for generations to come.
