Germany: Where Nature Flows

The Danube begins quietly in southern Germany, but its first landscapes are full of unexpected outdoor adventure. Follow the young river from its source in Baden-Württemberg through steep valleys, past places where its water disappears underground and into the Jurassic scenery of Bavaria. This is the Danube before it becomes the broad river seen farther downstream.

Start at the Danube source

Begin in Donaueschingen, where one of Europe’s great rivers begins its long journey east. Visit the historic source, then set out on foot or by bike beside a river still small enough to feel part of the surrounding countryside.

From here, you are following a waterway that will eventually cross or border ten countries on its way to the Black Sea.

Explore the upper Danube valley

Farther downstream, the Upper Danube Nature Park brings a dramatic change of scenery. Around Beuron, the river winds between forested slopes and towering white cliffs in a landscape sometimes nicknamed the “Swabian Grand Canyon.”

Explore it at your own pace on foot or by bike, pausing at viewpoints above the valley and beside the water. Beuron is a natural base for combining hiking or cycling with a cultural stop at its historic abbey.

Watch the Danube disappear

One of the young Danube’s most unusual natural features lies near Immendingen. At the Danube Sinkhole (Donauversinkung), water seeps through cracks and cavities in the rock before continuing underground.

When water levels and local access allow, you may even see sections of the exposed riverbed. Part of the water eventually reappears farther south and enters the Rhine system. This means that some Danube water ultimately flows towards the North Sea rather than the Black Sea.

Paddle between limestone cliffs

Discover the Upper Danube from a completely different perspective by canoeing between Hausen im Tal and Hundersingen. Paddle beneath high cliffs and past wooded slopes, castles and small riverside settlements.

Choose a shorter section or spend a longer day on the river, with time to pause along the way. Seasonal access and nature-protection rules apply, so check current paddling conditions before setting out.

Combine boat, hike and bike adventures in Altmühltal

Continue east into Bavaria and the Altmühltal Nature Park, where water and ancient rock formations create another distinctive setting for outdoor adventures.

Around Kelheim, combine cycling and hiking through wooded slopes with time on the water. A boat journey through the Danube Gorge takes you between dramatic cliffs before reaching Weltenburg Abbey beside a bend in the river. From here, the Danube continues east towards Austria and the next chapter of the journey.
