Explore Malta like a local

Malta is graced with historic cities, dramatic coastlines, and blue waters, but its richest depths appear when these are combined with quieter, lesser-known spots.

Valletta’s baroque streets and layered history include landmarks such as St. John's Co-Cathedral, a key stop, yet the city’s real rhythm is in its side streets, small cafés, and quiet viewpoints over the harbor.

A visit to the Blue Lagoon remains one of Malta’s most iconic experiences, but timing is everything: early morning or late afternoon reveal a calmer side than midday. Coves nearby offer quieter alternatives away from the crowds.

In the center of the island, Mdina offers silent streets and golden stone, while nearby Rabat brings everyday life into focus at bakeries and in small squares. For one of the most authentic local stops (and arguably the best pastizzi on the island), head to Is-Serkin – Crystal Palace Bar, where locals and travelers gather for fresh pastries straight from the oven.

In Malta, slowing down is more about timing than doing fewer things; choosing the right moment to visit a place can make a big difference to your impression of it. Start your day with a slow walk by the sea in the quiet of early morning to hear the waves and feel the air. Try an easy hike in the countryside at sunrise or sunset to see the beautiful skies change color; a quiet area, perhaps along the Victoria Lines towards Bingemma chapel, is one good place for this. Visit a rocky beach when it’s quiet and empty and enjoy a typical local snack, hobz biz zejt. Nothing beats the joy of eating seaside, savoring local bread covered with tomatoes, olive oil, olives, capers, and local ġbejniet.  This treat is widely available at the food trucks parked at most beaches.

On the western side, the Dingli Cliffs reveal a more rugged landscape where wind and sea replace architecture and crowds. These are the places that define everyday life. A leisurely walk along the Dingli Cliffs, with views over the sea, fresh air, and a peaceful atmosphere make it the perfect place to switch off and take a slower pace. Imtahleb is another good spot for a serene walk surrounded by nature. If you’re looking for something a bit more hidden, Migra l-Ferħa and Fomm ir-Riħ offer raw, untouched beauty. Buskett is another favorite for peaceful countryside escapes. Cool off in the summer with a swim at Fekruna Beach or Lapsi, and fuel your sightseeing with a relaxed BBQ by the Mediterranean.

The most memorable journeys are not about choosing between classic and hidden Malta, but moving naturally between them both.
