Where should all lovers of nature, serenity, and sunsets go when they visit Estonia? To the Romantic Coastline!
Pärnu is already widely known for its summertime vibe; the Romantic Coastline showcases the enchanting landscapes of Pärnu County. This trail of attractions both natural and cultural follows the Baltic Coast around Pärnu Bay, stretching north through the juniper fields of Varbla, and south to the Estonian Latvian border in Ikla, then reaching out into the Gulf of Riga to encompass the quiet shores of Kihnu Island.
Getting around
There are no rules when it comes to traveling the Romantic Coastline. You can rent a car and tick off attractions one by one, although we suggest slowing down to sink your toes in the sand and savor life along one of Estonia’s most beautiful areas.
The Romantic Coastline converges with both the EuroVelo 10 cycling route and the Baltic Coastal Trail hiking route. You can download route maps for both trails; look for the section from Ikla to Virtsu. At Virtsu, the routes take the ferry to Saaremaa.
The best beaches
While Pärnu Beach is the most popular beach in this area, the best beaches along the Romantic Coastline will feel like you’ve been washed up on a deserted island. They are peaceful, save for the sound of the waves.
These long sandy stretches are perfect for strolling or swimming:
- Kabli Beach — shallow waters that are perfect for children
- Valgerand Beach — summer café and an observation tower
- Matsi Beach — campsite and bonfire spots
Cultural attractions
The Romantic Coastline will give you a feel for authentic Estonian coastal culture. It passes through numerous small villages (look for the spires of the local church), and several lighthouses rise from the shoreline as reminders of the importance of fishing and sailing to the local communities.
Take a craft workshop or sweat in a traditional sauna at one of these spots:
- Tõstamaa Handicraft Center — dedicated to keeping local crafts alive
- Maria Farm — offers sauna, sleigh rides, and horseback riding
- Audru Manor — stroll the beautiful grounds
Kihnu Island
Kihnu Island’s relaxed vibe is similar to that of the mainland, though its unique history and culture make it feel like a world away. Rent a bike and stay the night to really get to know this fascinating place.
Here are a couple of suggestions for an immersive cultural experience:
- Guided tour of the island — learn about island life with a local
- Kihnu Museum — discover the meaning behind the stripes on the women’s skirts
- Local handicraft shops — support the island’s artisans
Places to eat along the way
Eat like a local at humble bakeries and tiny village shops, like Kabli Bakery and Pärnamäed Bakery and Café. Most places showcase products from local producers and highlight seasonal ingredients on their menus.
