Follow Croatia’s great rivers by bike, from the wild Mura and Drava to vineyards overlooking the Danube. EuroVelo routes and local trails lead through protected wetlands, small villages and wine country – with plenty of reasons to slow down, meet local people and keep riding across the next border.
Follow the Danube on EuroVelo 6
EuroVelo 6 enters Croatia from Hungary and follows the Danube through the wide-open landscapes of Baranja. Cycle past Batina and the wine villages of Zmajevac and Suza, then detour into Kopački Rit Nature Park, a remarkable wetland at the meeting of the Drava and Danube.
The route continues through Osijek and Vukovar before reaching the vineyard-covered hills around Ilok. From here, the Danube carries the journey onward toward Serbia – another chapter of the same cross-border cycling adventure. Plan your route with EuroVelo 6 in Croatia.
Ride the Former Iron Curtain
In northern Croatia, EuroVelo 13 – the Iron Curtain Trail follows a border once designed to separate people. Today, it connects cyclists with quiet villages, forests and the free-flowing landscapes of the Mura and Drava.
Along Croatian–Hungarian border, much of the route crosses the UNESCO Mura–Drava–Danube Biosphere Reserve. Old border stones and watchtowers add traces of recent European history to a ride now defined by nature and freedom. Explore EuroVelo 13 in Croatia.
Enter the Amazon of Europe
For a deeper nature experience, follow the Amazon of Europe Bike Trail through one of Europe's great river landscapes. The long-distance trail explores the Mura, Drava and Danube across five countries, combining forests, wetlands, river islands and small communities.
Parts of the Croatian route overlap with EuroVelo 13, making it easy to turn one ride into a longer journey through Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia. Expect a mix of cycling paths, quiet roads and occasional gravel — and bring binoculars for the wildlife.
Cycle from vineyard to cellar
Along the Danube, cycling and wine make natural partners – provided you plan tastings responsibly. In Baranja, pedal through vineyards to Zmajevac, where traditional wine cellars are dug into the hillside along narrow lanes called surduci.
At Erdut, vineyards rise above a great bend in the Danube. Follow the wine road to viewpoints, family wineries and the historic cellar with its enormous wooden wine barrel. Farther east, Ilok combines a medieval old town with cellars and vineyards overlooking the river.
The Vukovar–Ilok stretch is one of the most scenic parts of Croatia’s EuroVelo 6 route. Stop for a tasting, local food and a night in wine country before following the Danube onward into Serbia.
