A land with countless stories to tell

If you have never been to San Marino, 2023 is the right time to go! Here are some tips to discover the true essence of the oldest republic in the world.

Recently opened, the Titanus Museum is an immersive multimedia experience that aims to reveal the unique and fascinating history of the Republic of San Marino, which may be hard to grasp at first glance. In a very short time — the visit takes about 30 minutes — you will find out more about this millennial history and get to know some of the key characters, such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Giuseppe Garibaldi, who played a major role in preserving the freedom of the people living on this little piece of land. Through audio-guides, 3D maps, talking holograms and wall projections, the museum gives a clear answer to the most frequently asked question about this small yet ancient country: how, and more importantly why, has such a little territory succeeded in maintaining its independence through many centuries up to the present day?

Starting your itinerary with a stop at the Titanus Museum allows you to explore the old town with a better understanding of the stories behind the monuments and the buildings you will come across, as well as their relevance to San Marino’s citizens. Attractions not to be missed are the iconic three Towers, which form the summits of Mount Titano and provide breathtaking views of the area, the Public Palace, the seat of parliament, known as the Great and General Council, and all other State Museums. All of these are easily accessible by buying only one ticket, the multi-museum pass.

If you are looking for a genuine and unusual experience, the locals would absolutely recommend arranging your visit during one of the many traditional national holidays, which are extremely interesting especially when attended live. Twice a year — every April 1st and October 1st — you can admire the solemn Investiture Ceremony of the Captains Regent, our highest expression of the state and democracy. On these occasions, you can see the two new Heads of State, escorted by San Marino militias, parade in the streets of the old town together with government authorities, the diplomatic and consular corps, as well as military, civil, and religious bodies, and distinguished guests.

San Marino organizes many spectacular events throughout the year that offer other authentic, unique exclusive experiences. The local population, the Sammarinese, deeply cherish these celebrations and take part in them with great pride and affection for their country.
