South Tyrolean Bread and Strudel Festival

For three days, the cathedral square of Bressanone/Brixen is the scene of the South Tyrolean Bread and Strudel Festival. The 20 bakeries and pastry shops bearing the quality seal as well as their vast variety of products are the centre of attention.

Discover the wide range of bread and pastries that have always been present in South Tyrolean baking tradition. Several types of bread, traditional specialties from all areas of the region and of course South Tyrolean apple strudel – whether traditional or reinvented, what all products have in common is the use of high-quality ingredients, such as butter, apples and cereals, that derive primarily from the region. The use of preservatives and other additives as well as flavor enhancers is forbidden.

Some types of bread, especially those made from rye and spelt flour are made of cereals that were grown, harvested, grinded and processed in South Tyrol. This project called “RegioKorn” was launched in 2011 in order to promote cereal cultivation in South Tyrol. At the South Tyrolean Bread and Strudel Festival you will have the opportunity to taste and purchase bread with 100% local ingredients. Another important purpose of the festival is to demonstrate how grain becomes bread.

Instruments which were used to process grain in former times can be explored in a historic parcours. For the first time this year you also have the possibility to experience how bread with the quality seal South Tyrol is made: come and see for yourself what the simple ingredients are! You also find a children’s bakery where they can give a first try.

Local bands and a carriage ride through the old town center offer best entertainment.
