Experience a variety of fascinating routes

From the north to the south and from the west to the east, Germany has many scenically spectacular cycling and hiking routes to offer. Whether you are looking for a sporty adventure, a cultural experience, or an encounter with nature, Germany has it all.

The Romantic Road

The Romantic Road combines nature, culture and friendly hospitality. It is impossible not to marvel at the varied cultural landscapes in the southeast between the River Main, the Franconian wine region, and the Alpine peaks. Between Wurzburg and Füssen, the route crosses the charming Tauber Valley, the geological hotspot of Nördlinger Ries, and the idyllic Pfaffenwinkel region at the foot of the Alps in Upper Bavaria. You’ll travel through medieval towns with pretty, half-timbered houses. Before the route finishes in style at King Ludwig’s fairytale castles, which are surrounded by four lakes against the backdrop of the Ammergau Alps Nature Reserve.

The German Fehnroute

Explore the northwest of Germany by bike on the German Fehnroute, which runs between Papenburg in the south and Aurich in the north. Even those less athletically inclined can master the 170-kilometre route because it runs through the northern German lowlands, where the countryside is flat. Cycle through the typical East Frisian landscape with its moorland canals, locks, bridges and wild nature reserves. You will encounter romantic windmills and typical Nordic cottages with their red clinker brick construction. Many more attractions, like small museums, tell eventful tales of moor settlers and sailors, wait for you in the 20 towns along the Fehnroute.

The Castle Road

The Castle Road, stretching 780 kilometers from Mannheim to Bayreuth in the south of Germany, is a captivating cycle and hiking route featuring over 60 castles and palaces in Germany. Alongside these impressive fortresses, visitors can explore various attractions such as falconries, rustic pubs, caves, medieval villages, and museums. The route lives up to its name, offering a continuous array of castles and picturesque towns with half-timbered buildings, all of which provide fascinating insights into the past. The diverse countryside accompanied by medieval towns as well as the warm hospitality add up to an extraordinary experience.
