Slovakia: travel light, go slow

In Slovakia, travelling more responsibly can be surprisingly simple: leave the car behind, follow the Danube by bike, paddle its quieter side arms and spend locally in the small communities along the way. From Bratislava to the Little Danube and Great Rye Island, slowing down often brings you closer to the places you came to discover.

Explore Bratislava without a car

Start on foot in Bratislava’s compact historic centre, then use trams, buses and trolleybuses to reach farther out. The Bratislava CARD includes unlimited public transport during its validity and can also open the door to attractions such as Bratislava and Devín castles.

Pick up something local at Stará tržnica (Old Market Hall) then continue by bike along the Danube or use public transport towards your next experience.

Practical tip: For a 24-, 48- or 72-hour stay, check whether the Bratislava CARD fits your plans before buying individual tickets.

Give nature some space

At Devínska Kobyla, stay on marked trails, keep noise low and leave plants and wildlife where you find them. Carry out everything you carry in.

Farther along the Danube, stop at the Čunovo Ecocentre, located in a newly renovated historic manor house, to understand the landscape before exploring it.

. Interactive exhibits introduce the Danube, floodplain forests, meadows and Great Rye Island – useful context for what you will encounter outdoors. This visually impressive exhibition promises an enjoyable experience for the whole family.

Take the slow route through Matúšova Zem

Take the train to Galanta and explore the surrounding Matúšova zem (Matúš Land) at a slower pace. Its flat cycling routes connect villages, water mills and waterways, while local paddling operators can introduce you to the Little Danube from water level.

Stop at village restaurants, wineries, museums or family-run accommodation rather than simply passing through. Spring and early autumn bring comfortable conditions for cycling and paddling and a quieter experience at small attractions.

Practical tip: Rural opening hours can be limited, so arrange guided visits and paddling in advance. Refill your water bottle before longer rural sections.

Stay beside the inland Delta

At Vojka nad Dunajom, stay close enough to nature to explore without repeatedly getting into a car. Small-scale VAJKA campsite provides a base for cycling, birdwatching and paddling through the Danube's quiet side arms and floodplain forests.

Rent a canoe or join a guided paddle, then let the landscape set the pace. Keep voices low near wildlife, respect quiet hours and leave riverbanks exactly as you found them.

Practical tip: VAJKA operates seasonally, so check opening dates and book ahead for summer weekends.
