Serbia naturally wild

Follow the Danube through Serbia and nature keeps changing around you. Paddle past wetlands, hike through vineyard-covered hills and explore forests, cliffs and river gorges – from the quiet floodplains of northern Serbia to the dramatic landscapes of the Iron Gate.

Enter the upper Danube wetlands

Near Serbia’s border with Hungary and Croatia, the Upper Danube Special Nature Reserve protects a remarkable landscape of floodplain forests, marshes, river islands and channels. Around Bezdan and Apatin, slow down to explore by boat, bike or on foot and look for white-tailed eagles, black storks and other wildlife.

This is part of the wider Mura–Drava–Danube UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, a river landscape shared across five countries. The borders may change, but the wetlands continue.

Find wild nature near Novi Sad

Just beyond Novi Sad, the Kovilj-Petrovaradin Wetlands Special Nature Reserve offers an easy escape into nature. The Danube has created a mosaic of side channels, islands, reed beds, meadows and floodplain forest where birdwatching and quiet exploration replace the energy of the city.

Combine the wetlands with nearby Kovilj, then return to Novi Sad for cafés and city life beside the same river.

Hike through Fruška Gora

Across the Danube from Novi Sad, Fruška Gora National Park rises from the otherwise flat Vojvodina landscape. Hiking trails weave through oak and beech forests, past historic monasteries and viewpoints, while vineyards cover the lower slopes.

Walk for a few hours or spend a full day exploring, then stop in a village winery or continue to nearby Sremski Karlovci. In fall, forest colours and the grape harvest give the hills a different rhythm.

Discover Labudovo Okno

Farther downstream, Labudovo Okno reveals another side of the Danube. This internationally important wetland lies where the river broadens beside sandy banks, marshes and steppe landscapes in southeastern Banat.

Its shallow waters and islands provide habitat for large numbers of migratory and wintering waterbirds. Bring binoculars, take your time and experience a part of the Danube where wildlife – rather than landmarks – sets the itinerary.

Explore the Iron Gate

At Đerdap National Park, the Danube enters its most dramatic Serbian landscape. Hike above the Iron Gate for views across the river to Romania, explore forest-covered slopes or follow trails to viewpoints high above the gorge.

The wider Đerdap UNESCO Global Geopark adds millions of years of geological history to the experience, alongside archaeological sites such as Lepenski Vir and the communities that have lived beside the river for thousands of years.

From Golubac to Donji Milanovac and onward toward Kladovo, the Danube becomes both your route and your constant companion – continuing downstream toward another country and eventually the Black Sea.
