Chełmno, “City of Lovers”

Chełmno, which earned the nickname "The City of Lovers" thanks to the relics of St. Valentine kept for centuries in its parish church, celebrates Valentine's Day in a grand manner. The city itself is full of Valentine-themed games, competitions, and exhibitions. On February 14th the festivities culminate in a concert by well-known artists in the Market Square, during which a large heart made of lanterns is traditionally arranged on the pavement. Local bakers and confectioners prepare vast quantities of Valentine’s buns made with lovage (popular in Chełmno year-round) and other heart-shaped treats.

Couples can sit on a bench in the New Planty Park and, despite the winter chill, feel the warm atmosphere and unique charm of this medieval city of lovers.

Kazimierz Dolny and Sandomierz, enchanting, romantic towns

Sandomierz and Kazimierz Dolny are perfect for romantic strolls through beautifully lit old towns. Like a ribbon, the Vistula River intertwines both cities, making them even more attractive to people in love.

Also known as "Little Rome," Sandomierz is picturesquely situated on seven hills and has preserved its medieval street layout with a fascinating sloping market square. A romantic tour begins at the 650-year-old Opatowska Gate, leads toward the almost square market (100m x 110m) and its Gothic Town Hall with a massive anchor at the top.

Kazimierz Dolny, on the other hand, is a green oasis for artists. A charming view of the town and the river stretches from the Hill of Three Crosses. Climbing slightly higher, to the ruins of the castle tower, feels as if you’ve entered a fairy tale. Find love-favoring angels at the foot of the castle, where the parish church is located. From there, it’s just a few steps to the market square. It‘s surrounded by the former houses of merchants, nobility, and burghers, including the best-preserved Renaissance Przybyło Houses in Poland, adorned with lace-like attics and figurative-geometric decorations on their facades.

Valentine's Day with UNESCO

While on a Valentine's trip, visiting larger cities whose old towns are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List is also worthwhile. These include, of course, the Old Towns of Kraków, Warsaw and Zamość, and the medieval town of Toruń.

Let these suggestions start you off, but there are truly countless places in Poland for a romantic, original experience together. Everyone will find something interesting, from villages and small towns to natural and cultural areas, such as parks, and large, vibrant cities.
