Enjoy endless walking and cycling fun in the vast Hoge Kempen National Park. You can also admire stunning art in beautiful landscapes. Limburg is a destination of surprises to explore during your trip through Flanders.
The Belgian province of Limburg is a region of many faces. It's known as one of the most charming places in Flanders, where you'll always receive a warm welcome. Limburg's beautiful green surroundings are a wonderful backdrop for long walks in places like the Hoge Kempen National Park. Here you can wander through 12,000 hectares of pristine nature and admire Flanders' most beautiful panoramas. Discover purple heathlands, golden dunes, endless forests, romantic fens and much more.
This natural abundance can be explored on one of Flanders' Finest Walking Routes through the park. Walking routes such as the Duinengordel, Munsterbos, Pietersheim, Thorpark, and Terhills trails takes take you along the most beautiful sights in this park — the best of the best. In fact, all five of these routes proudly carry the Leading Quality Trails — Best of Europe, Day Walk label. This European quality label is awarded only to walks that meet the most stringent requirements for landscape variety, nature, culture, signage, and infrastructure.
Unique cycling experiences
Limburg also offers many fantastic experiences for cyclists. Cycling through Water leads you along a path through a huge pond. This perfectly straight cycle path gradually descends until the water is at eye level — and all without getting wet! Cycling through the Trees literally takes you to higher levels. During this adventure, you cycle steadily uphill until you're among the treetops. You'll experience nature in a totally different way. As you cycle, you become one with the forest.
Art in open landscape
The Limburg landscape is always astonishing; the artistic installations in the countryside are the cherry on the cake. To see this, head to the Haspengouw, the fruit region par excellence. In the town of Borgloon there are two impressive works of open air art. Also called “the see-through church”, Reading Between the Lines is made of 100 stacked steel plates. Thanks to its special construction, the landscape is always visible through its walls. A little further on, stop and admire Helsheaven, a floating chapel built from the trunks of dozens of cherry trees. It appears to float above the Haspengouw.
Traveling through Europe? You won't want to miss the adventures on offer in Limburg. Its stunning walks, unique cycling adventures and beautiful art in open landscape never disappoint. That's a promise.
