Slovakia is made for cycling at river pace: mostly flat routes link Bratislava with Danube floodplains, contemporary art, castles, water mills and small-town life. Follow international EuroVelo (EV) trails or branch onto local loops around Galanta, where the journey becomes quieter and more local.
Follow the Danube on EuroVelo 6
From Bratislava, EV 6 follows the Danube east toward Štúrovo on an easy 168-km Slovak section. Ride it as a longer challenge or break it into stages through floodplain forests and riverside communities. At Gabčíkovo Waterworks, an impressive feat of engineering on the Danube, watch ships pass through the locks; farther downstream, Komárno and Roman heritage near Iža add culture before the river carries you to Štúrovo and the Hungarian border.
For a different perspective, detour across Žitný ostrov (Great Rye Island), a lowland landscape shaped by water, villages and quiet dikes.
Closer to Bratislava, make Čunovo a day ride. The riverside route leads to the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum dramatically set on the water, while the nearby Čunovo water-sports centre adds rafting and whitewater action. Explore the complete EuroVelo 6 route in Slovakia.
Ride toward Devín on EuroVelo 13
Turn west and EV 13 tells another European story. The Iron Curtain Trail connects Bratislava with Devín, where the ruins of Hrad Devín rise above the meeting of the Danube and Morava rivers. Beyond the castle are river wetlands, birdlife and traces of the former border landscape.
The Slovak EV 13 section continues north toward Moravský Svätý Ján and connects naturally with routes in Austria and Czechia – an easy way to keep a multi-country trip rolling.
Find water mills around Galanta
For slower cycling and a closer look at rural Slovakia, head to the Galanta district. Fourteen local routes cover about 162 km, mostly across easy, flat terrain. The In the Footsteps of Water Mills circuit follows streams and the Little Danube to historic mills, including Jelka, with an optional visit to the restored Tomášikovo mill.
Other local rides lead from Galanta toward Kráľová Reservoir on the Váh, where fields, water and birdlife open up around the trail, or between Tomášikovo and Čierna Voda through meadows, woodland and river scenery. Find route ideas from the local tourism organization Matúšova zem – Mátyusföld.
These routes work especially well in late spring and early fall, when cycling temperatures are comfortable and trails feel more relaxed. Whether you choose a few hours beside Bratislava or several days following the Danube, the bike gives you something a road trip cannot: time to notice how landscapes and communities change as one river leads into the next country.
The route claims above are supported by Slovakia's official tourism site: EV 6 runs 168 km from Bratislava toward Štúrovo with almost no elevation, passing Čunovo, Gabčíkovo, Komárno and Iža; EV 13 follows the former Iron Curtain landscape past Devín and the Morava wetlands. The Galanta routes are likewise predominantly flat, while the Water Mills route connects the area's waterways and historic milling heritage.
