Follow the Danube through Serbia by bike and watch the landscape change with every stage. EuroVelo 6 takes you from Vojvodina’s wetlands and easy-going towns to lively cities, centuries-old fortresses and the towering cliffs of the Iron Gate — all connected by the same river that keeps flowing toward the Black Sea.
Slow down in Vojvodina
Near Serbia’s northern border, the Bezdan–Apatin–Sombor area is a gentle introduction to cycling the Danube. Ride across the flat Bačka plain, explore the river's backwaters and wetlands, then stop in Apatin for a break beside the Danube. In Sombor, tree-lined streets, cafés and the city's traditional horse-drawn carriages offer a taste of local life away from Europe's busier visitor circuit.
This is cycling without a rush: bring binoculars for the wetlands, stop when a riverside terrace looks inviting and let the landscape set the pace.
Pair Novi Sad with Fruška Gora
EuroVelo 6 brings you into Novi Sad, where the Danube flows beneath Petrovaradin Fortress. From here, turn toward Sremski Karlovci, a small Baroque town surrounded by vineyards, and make time to taste the local wines.
For more of a challenge, continue into Fruška Gora National Park. Forest roads and hillier terrain replace the flat Danube route, with monasteries, vineyards and viewpoints providing plenty of reasons to get off the bike.
Cycle through Belgrade's river life
In Belgrade, cycling puts the city's relationship with its rivers front and centre. Start below Belgrade Fortress at the meeting of the Sava and Danube, then follow the river toward Zemun, where cafés and old streets invite an unhurried stop.
Another ride follows the Sava toward Ada Ciganlija, the city's favourite outdoor playground. Join locals cycling, walking and relaxing beside the water before returning to the centre.
Follow the fortresses downstream
Farther east, the Danube becomes a route through centuries of borderland history. At Ram, cycle up to the 15th-century fortress overlooking the river. Continue downstream to Golubac Fortress, where medieval towers guard the entrance to the Iron Gate gorge.
Farther along the river in Kladovo, Fetislam Fortress adds an Ottoman chapter to the journey. Together, the three fortresses turn a cycling trip into a timeline you can ride through. Explore Serbia's Danube fortresses.
Ride into the Iron Gate
The Golubac–Donji Milanovac stretch brings a different kind of adventure. Leaving Golubac, enter Đerdap National Park, known internationally as the Iron Gate, where wooded slopes rise above the Danube and the broad river begins squeezing between the mountains.
Take it slowly, stop for the views and make Donji Milanovac your base for exploring more of the gorge. This is where Serbia's EuroVelo journey feels connected to the wider Danube story: Romania lies across the water and the river keeps leading east toward another border, another landscape and eventually the Black Sea.
