Croatia: travel slow, stay local

Eastern Croatia is made for slowing down. Travel by train and bike, stay with local hosts, buy food where it is produced and explore wetlands with people who know them – simple choices that bring you closer to Slavonia, Baranja and Syrmia while helping tourism benefit the communities and landscapes you came to experience.

Arrive by train, continue by bike

Instead of driving all the way from Zagreb, take the train towards Osijek or Vinkovci and make the journey part of the experience. Once here, the flat landscapes of eastern Croatia are well suited to exploring by bicycle.

Follow sections of EuroVelo 6, connect with local cycling routes or spend a day riding between villages, vineyards and the Danube. Around Baranja, Erdut and Ilok, cycling also pairs naturally with the wine and food experiences already waiting along the route.

Practical tip: Check current train schedules and bicycle-carriage rules before travelling, or ask your accommodation host about bike rental and local transfers.

Sleep where rural life continues

Swap a standard hotel stay for a family farmstead (OPG) or rural holiday home in Slavonia, Baranja or Syrmia. Staying locally gives you more time in smaller communities and a chance to meet the people who live and work here.

Don't save rural Croatia only for summer. Spring landscapes, autumn harvests and quiet winter stays each reveal a different side of the region – without having to rush between attractions during the busiest travel months.

Buy it from the people who make it

Remember the kulen, local wines and regional food from our Baranja and Ilok journey? Go one step closer to their source.

Stop at family farms, wineries and small producers to buy kulen, honey, wine and other regional products directly. Around Zmajevac, Erdut and Ilok, turn the purchase into part of the experience: talk to the producer, learn how something is made and take a taste of the Danube region home with you.

Practical tip: Carry some cash when visiting small rural producers and ask your host which farms welcome visitors.

Explore wild places with local knowledge

Eastern Croatia's quieter landscapes deserve the same care. At places such as Virovi Forest and Kopački rit, explore with local guides where available and stay on designated routes, particularly around sensitive habitats.

The same approach works when birdwatching, hiking or paddling elsewhere in the Croatian Danube region: move quietly, leave wildlife undisturbed and let local knowledge show you what is easy to miss on your own.

Practical tip: In summer, carry plenty of water, wear light clothing and bring insect repellent for wetland areas and evening outdoor activities.
