Beyond the Netherlands’ tulips

While most international travelers to the Netherlands associate Dutch springtime with tulip fields, other remarkable, natural experiences await, besides the bulb routes. Two regions in particular — Zeeland and Limburg — showcase a different side of this compact country, where coastal wilderness and rolling countryside replace the flat, urban landscape unknown to many visitors.

Zeeland: where sea meets sky

Zeeland province, in the country's southwestern corner, feels worlds away from Amsterdam's canals, only about two hours away. This collection of islands and peninsulas is defined by the North Sea and features some of Europe's cleanest beaches, stretching for miles. Spring brings mild temperatures perfect for cycling the extensive network of coastal paths, where you'll spot everything from seals on the sand to birds in the nature reserves.

The Delta Works — a massive system of dams and barriers built after devastating floods in 1953 — makes for fascinating exploration. These engineering marvels double as unique ecosystems where freshwater and saltwater habitats merge.

Limburg: The Netherlands' secret wine country

Head southeast to Limburg province, and suddenly the Netherlands has hills! The area around Maastricht, the country's oldest city, offers limestone caves, medieval castles, and vineyards that produce increasingly respected wines, despite being at the northern edge of Europe's wine belt.

The Mergelland region's gentle slopes are dotted with historic estates and chateaus, including Château Neercanne, with its terraced baroque gardens. Spring brings cherry blossoms to the Bloesemroute cycling path, while the Limburg countryside explodes in fresh green.

Maastricht itself rewards wanderers with cobblestoned squares, Roman ruins, and a food scene influenced by neighboring Belgium and Germany. From Amsterdam, Maastricht is less than three hours away by direct train.

Both regions prove that the Netherlands contains multitudes beyond windmills and tulips — come, venture beyond the usual routes and find them!
