Autumn on the move in Slovakia

Autumn is the ideal time for an active holiday in Slovakia, with pleasant temperatures, sunny days, and stable weather. Slovakia attracts both hikers and cyclists with its varied landscape, ranging from majestic mountains to picturesque valleys and wine regions. Visitors will find more than 16,000 kilometers of marked hiking trails here, as well as about 18,000 kilometers of cycling trails of all difficulty levels.

Autumn hiking in the High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry)

The Vysoké Tatry mountains, Slovakia’s highest mountain range, are a hiker’s paradise. A dense network of hiking trails leads you to iconic mountain cottages via picturesque saddles and to the Tatra peaks. Since this is an alpine environment, selected trails are closed from November to the end of May. Even during this period, however, you can visit several popular locations, including some of the alpine cottages.

Mountain cottages open all year round in the High Tatras

Consider a trip to the Sliezsky dom, which you can start with a funicular ride from Starý Smokovec to Hrebienok. From Hrebienok, you can also head for Téryho chata cottage, the highest mountain cottage that is open all year round. You can take the same route for a hike through Veľká Studená dolina valley to the Zbojnícká chata cottage.

Tatra mountain lakes and Lomnický štít peak

In the Vysoké Tatry mountains, you can also seek out dozens of mountain lakes, called plesá in Slovak. Ride the funicular from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté pleso lake and enjoy unique panoramic views along the way. You can continue by cable car to Lomnický štít, the second-highest mountain peak in the Tatras. A visit to Chata pri Zelenom plese, which is open all year round, is another unforgettable experience.

Slovenský kras National Park and Zádielska Gorge

Slovakia also hides its natural gems in other regions. At Slovenský kras National Park, you can discover more than 1,300 caves and chasms, which are part of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most impressive places is the Zádielska tiesňava gorge, whose monumental rock walls create a landscape reminiscent of the famous Norwegian fjords. A walk through the gorge is a real treat, as it narrows to a width of only 10 meters in places, while the limestone cliffs on both sides rise to a height of up to 400 meters.

Autumn cycling routes in Slovakia

You can also explore Slovakia on a bicycle in autumn. The Malé Karpaty mountains near Bratislava offer a diverse network of routes, from comfortable wine tours to challenging mountain paths. Among the most popular is the JuRaVa cycling route, while more experienced cyclists take on the Green Bike Tour, which traverses the entire mountain range. You’ll likewise find brilliant opportunities in central Slovakia. Here you can bike the two highest-placed cycling trails in the country, leading to the Kráľova hoľa and Krížna peaks. The circuit from the historic Banská Štiavnica, a town on the UNESCO heritage list, to Sitno Hill and back provides a combination of nature and cultural heritage.
