Your ticket for car-free hiking in Luxembourg

Enjoy a unique adventure: travel by train for a wander in the wilderness

Nestled in the heart of Europe, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg boasts one of the continent’s most extensive networks of hiking paths in Europe. The best part? Many of these trails are easily accessible from the capital city thanks to Luxembourg’s free train services.

Rail history on CFL Hiking Trail 30

Rail lovers will be amazed by the rewards of this 17.8k trail linking the stations of Oberkorn and Rodange. Situated in the south, this scenic route winds its way through the striking red rock landscape of a revitalized mining region and the renowned Minett Park, where visitors can marvel at the original steam trains. Until the 1960s this area was a bustling hub of iron ore mining, the railways transporting this precious cargo to nearby forges.

Amidst these peaceful surroundings, travelers can enjoy a leisurely visit to the sleepy valley villages of Fonds-de-Gras or Lasauvage, or stop for lunch at the Station Bistro, Bei der Giedel, or the upmarket Presbytère.

Train travel time from Luxembourg City: 30-50 minutes.

Nature & royalty on CFL Trail 42

If you are looking for picturesque scenery to make your Instagram feed shine bright, take the train to Luxembourg’s enchanting Moselle region. In addition to the rolling hills covered with vinyards and sunny riverside villages, visitors will find stunning rock formations, mysterious forests and babbling streams.

This 7.4 kilometer “easy” trail begins in Betzdorf, a sleepy town whose castle was once home to Luxembourg’s late Grand Duke Jean. Today it is the headquarters of satellite operator SES. CFL Trail 42 begins with a strenuous uphill walk on a graveled path, but the rest of the journey to Manternach is relatively flat.

Visitors eager to clock up more kilometers can continue to Manternacher Fiels, a pristine nature reserve boasting Luxembourg’s largest canyon forest. Manternach’s A Wiewesch nature conservation center sheds light on the ways the region combines agriculture and biodiversity and is also well worth a visit.

Northern exposure on CFL Trail 7

Immerse yourself in Luxembourg’s wild and rugged Éislek region, nestled in the scenic north. On this 12.5-kilometre hike from Wiltz to Kautenbach, every step unveils a tapestry of lush forests, expansive fields and awe-inspiring vistas.

In Wiltz, beer aficionados will enjoy the brewing museum housed within the castle complex. The Museum of the Battle of the Bulge offers history buffs a compelling insight into the area’s wartime legacy.

This journey presents some exhilarating climbs, such as in Nocher, and is classified as “medium” in difficulty. With options to customize the length, hikers can tailor the trail to their own fitness levels.
