Sustainable summer adventures for you!
From the floating bridge in Lultzhausen, the view of Upper Sûre is particularly beautiful. The water is calm. No loud engine noises disturb the peace, because only quiet boats and all kinds of motor-free water sports are allowed on this lake. Over there, two SUP paddlers balance on their boards, laughing and chatting as they move towards the other shore, where the lush greenery seems to reach right up to the surface of the water.
On the meadow in front of the youth hostel, a group of young people pushes kayaks and canoes into the water. From here, you can paddle a few hundred meters along a branch of the reservoir. The water flows like a fjord, becoming a little narrower afterd every bend and finally turning into a stream. This is a wonderful place to take a break. Spread out your picnic blanket, unpack your coffee pot and camping cups, an original Ardennes ham from the Éislek, and some fresh bread, and enjoy nature. These are oases in the middle of Luxembourg, places you can’t reach by car and ideal for clearing the mind. You can explore the reservoir and the fauna and flora around it on a two-hour natural history ride on a solar-powered boat. If you like activities with a little more intensity, you can even go diving in Lultzhausen. A diving school offers courses for all levels.
The reservoir is the largest body of water within a radius of 50 km, gleaming in the hilly forest landscape of the Upper Sûre Nature Park in Éislek, the northernmost region of Luxembourg. The whole area invites you to slow down — which does not necessarily mean being inactive, however. On the contrary, nature and outdoor activities such as hiking and cycling are just as common here as paddling and diving. Mountain bike trails and hiking paths always lead to the lake or around it. The most famous hiking trails in Éislek are the Lee Trail and the Escapardenne Éislek Trail, which crosses the border into Belgium. On a smaller scale, there are 18 new Éislek Paths, which are based on the criteria of the European Hiking Federation and are ideal for discovering the beauty of Luxembourg’s countryside.
Take in the wonderful view of the lake from the Burfelt Belvedere in the middle of the Burfelt nature reserve. The geological heritage of imposing sandstone rocks with narrow crevices and deep gorges, as well as the great diversity of plants, are all to see in the Mëllerdall UNESCO Global Geopark. Many rock formations in the Mullerthal, also called “Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland”, are closely associated with sagas and legends and bear mysterious names. Hikers discover the landscape best on the 112 km Mullerthal Trail. In the south of the country, the Minett Trail leads through the Minett UNESCO Biosphere, a former industrial wasteland where nature is spectacularly reclaiming its place.
Within Luxembourg, sustainable travel is encouraged by making use of the free public transport! Here is all the information you need to plan your trip.
