Swap the crowds, explore hidden canals, embrace real Dutch charm

Tucked away on the west coast of the Netherlands is Leiden, known as the city of discoveries thanks to its rich history of science. And discoveries you will make as well! It’s historic, gorgeous, and lined with canals in nearly the same way as Amsterdam yet with a major difference: it’s off the tourist track and far from the crowds. Here are three things to do in Leiden, a hidden Dutch gem that gives you access to real local culture, history, and heritage.

Explore the city on the water

If you look at Leiden from above, you’ll see a half dozen canals snaking through the city. These waterways offer the ideal means of exploration. If you’re there in winter, rent an electric boat or join a boat tour. If you’re there in summer, a kayak is the way to go. Either way, once you’re on the water, gliding through the serene canals, you’ll start to unveil the remarkable history of this place. There is centuries-old architecture, intricate bridges, and perfect docks to disembark for a cold beer, a hot coffee, and a basket of fries—whatever floats your boat!

Immense history and culture revealed

Leiden’s contributions to history run deep. On every corner of its historic center are places where great discoveries were made or masterpieces created. Speaking of which, Leiden’s most famous son is none other than Rembrandt himself, the master of the Netherlands’ Golden Age whose use of light and shadow is beyond compare. Trace Rembrandt’s footsteps from the old Academy building to the canals and courtyards, connecting with the life of the painter in a deep and unique way.

A city for all modes of exploration

Leiden is extremely easy to reach—a direct commuter train from Schiphol Airport or Amsterdam. Once you arrive, you’ll find that the city is ideal for all sorts of exploration. Most obvious is to use your good old two feet. Leiden is one of the Netherlands’ most walkable places. What’s more, it’s also a city where walking is truly enjoyable. It’s calm, gorgeous, and home to hundreds of small shops, cafes, and restaurants that are best discovered while on a meandering stroll. The other obvious choice is to rent a bike. As with most of the country, Leiden has excellent bike paths. These two options offer a relaxing, stimulating, and environmentally responsible adventure—what’s better than that?
