Wild nature preserved for adventure

Imagine a triangle of extraordinary beauty in southeastern Serbia, between the towns of Pirot, Dimitrovgrad and Babušnica. You are invited to visit the Jerma Special Nature Reserve, a hidden gem where wild nature and beauty are preserved for real adventurers.

The Jerma River

The Jerma River, stretching 72 kilometers, connects two countries: Serbia and Bulgaria, offering a spectacular journey through its landscapes. Originating near Vlasina Lake in Serbia, the river flows into Bulgaria before returning to Serbia near the village of Petaćinci and merging with the Nišava River at Sukovo. The Jerma has created many canyons, gorges and steep cliffs, such as the Jerma River Canyon is one of our most dramatic landscapes.

Owing to its inaccessibility and isolation until the 1970s, the Jerma River Canyon and its flora and fauna were undisturbed for a long time, so today its original beauty is still largely intact. In the 1970s a road was built to replace a narrow-gauge railroad used by the steam train Ćira to transport ore from the former mine also called Jerma.

Thanks to its inaccessibility and isolation until the 1970s, the Jerma River Canyon has preserved its original flora and fauna, making it a sanctuary of its original beauty. The canyon remained untouched until a road replaced the narrow-gauge railroad once used by the steam train Ćira to transport ore from the former Jerma mine.

The green eco-adventure destination offers a variety of opportunities for hiking, sport climbing, mountain biking, wild caving and camping. Poganovo Monastery is one of the most popular cultural monuments in the area and serves as a symbol of the Jerma River Canyon and the village of Poganovo.
