Explore Finnish hidden island jewels

With over 50,000 islands scattered across the Baltic Sea, Finland boasts the world’s largest archipelago, full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Maritime vibes, historic manors, and national parks lining the Finnish Coast and Archipelago, along with 330 islands around the Helsinki region, create the perfect backdrop for island adventures year-round, from island hopping to multi-day explorations. Here are four in Finland you shouldn’t miss:

1. Suomenlinna Island, Helsinki

Immerse yourself in Finnish history at the famous Fortress of Suomenlinna, one of Finland’s seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, in the stunning Helsinki archipelago. Hop on a public transport ferry from Helsinki harbor and head around the island to discover a unique blend of nature and history of one the largest sea fortresses of the world — perhaps even under the glow of the midnight sun.

2. Bengtskär, Turku Islands

About 25 kilometers southwest of the maritime city of Hanko, the rocky island of Bengtskär is home to the Nordic’s tallest lighthouse, Bengtskär Lighthouse. From its construction at the end of the 19th century to battles fought on the island during the 1940s, this lighthouse island carries a fascinating history. Climb up the tower for breathtaking views of the Baltic Sea or even stay in the unique lighthouse accommodation for a night or two.
