Across the Westhoek poppies and vineyard

Today, one of the most important battlefields of World War I, besides being a place of remembrance, is also a paradise for wine lovers. The Westhoek is a surprising destination with plenty of wine estates for you to visit.

It’s true, Belgium is best known for its iconic local beers, but the country can stand its ground when it comes to wine as well. Did you know that the Romans were already growing wine in Haspengouw 2,000 years ago? This Belgian fruit region still excels in wine grapes today. The fertile valley of the Meuse is also an exciting wine region, as is the Hageland, east of Leuven. Yet one of the most remarkable wine regions in Flanders is unquestionably the Westhoek, known as Flanders Fields to the rest of the world, one of the most important battlefields of World War I.

The Westhoek/Flanders Fields still serves as a tangible reminder of those dark pages in history books. Today, however, there is also much beauty to discover, thanks in part to the extraordinary landscape. Hilly slopes, the impact of the North Sea and soil rich in ironstone create a unique terroir for winegrowing.

Heuvelland, in particular, is a recognized wine-growing area. This amalgamated municipality is barely the size of a handkerchief, yet it is home to some 20 highly rated wine estates. Entre-Deux-Monts is a lovely example. The estate between Rodeberg and Zwarteberg runs like clockwork. A little further, you will find Monteberg, the oldest wine estate in Heuvelland. With 18 other growers, they form Vintage Heuvelland vzw. Together, they promote viticulture in the region, for example, at the annual Open Vineyard Festival.

Each of these Flemish châteaux in Vintage Heuvelland is worth a visit. You can experience wonderful wine tastings and much more. Why not stay longer in the Westhoek? Heerlyckheyt Roonen Bergh is also a holiday home, and at Ravenstein, you can park your camper amidst the vineyards. ’t Zwaluwnest is also a B&B and Den Nachtegael is a beautiful location for events.

These wine estates will take care of you and ensure you enjoy your stay. They offer an ideal base from which to explore the region, introducing you to the unique history of Flanders Fields. Would you like to explore by bike? The Peace cycle route takes you past the scars left by World War I on the Westhoek. Fancy an adventure?
