A journey through traditional Czech workshops

Czechia is rich in craft traditions, from glassmaking and ceramics to Easter egg painting. If you’re looking for a unique experience, consider an interesting workshop where you can create a unique, authentically Czech gift with your own hands!

Unique jewelry or a delicate Christmas ornament

Czechs are master glassmakers, and hand-blown Czech glass is admired worldwide. Visit the Crystal Valley glassworks, where at the renowned Pačinek Glass, made famous in the American film Onion Glass, starring Daniel Craig, you can try glassblowing yourself. On the way, stop by the Cvikov brewery for a beer or lunch, or visit the famous local bakery.

From Liberec, head to Jablonec nad Nisou, home of the stunning Museum of Glass and Jewelry, which boasts an impressive collection of handmade jewelry and Christmas decorations. Not only can you buy Czech glass beads here, you can also create a unique piece of jewelry for yourself or for someone special. Another place to try local crafts is Rautis in Poniklá, where you can make a Christmas ornament from glass beads using a technique listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Indigo block printing and Easter egg painting

Indigo block printing is a unique textile technique and a Czech cultural treasure listed by UNESCO. In workshops such as those in Strážnice, you can design your own pattern and dye the fabric using this traditional method. Meanwhile, at the Wallachian Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, you can learn traditional Easter egg decorating techniques, such as wax batik or relief carving, and create your own unique Easter decorations.

Make an enameled mug

At the enamel workshop in the heart of Prague at Karmelitská you can create your own enameled products. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will learn how to work with enamel and take home your finished product in no time. The workshop is open daily and suitable for everyone. Maříž ceramics are known for their hand-painted designs. At workshops in Maříž near Slavonice, set in the beautiful nature of Czech Canada, you can shape and decorate your own ceramic piece.

Handmade paper mill in Velké Losiny

Would you like to make paper using historical techniques? In Velké Losiny, home to one of the oldest paper mills in Europe, you can take part in a workshop to create your own sheet of handmade paper. It’s the perfect destination for a day trip. Besides the paper mill, you can also visit the beautiful Renaissance chateau.

Brew your own beer

Experience brewing beer with a brewmaster at the Kamenice Brewery, located near Tábor and Jindřichův Hradec, about an hour and a half south of Prague. You will enjoy a guided brewery tour, take part in the brewing process, and, of course, taste the golden beverage. Since beer is the Czech national drink, don’t miss out on getting hands-on experience in beer tapping right in the center of Prague, near the Municipal House. The renowned Červený Jelen restaurant regularly hosts a beer-tapping school.
