Discover hidden islands and archipelagos
Denmark is surrounded by the sea and comprises hundreds of small islands, each with its own character. It allows you to slow down and tune out of the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If that sounds like heaven to you, here are some of the Danish islands you need to know about.
Island Hop in the South Fyn Archipelago
You might not know this, but Denmark is an island destination. Denmark boasts over 400 islands, and many hidden island gems are nestled around the pretty coast of Fyn. Drejø is one of the islands around Fyn that are a must-visit. It boasts rich wildlife and is home to the beautiful white fallow deer. The island is only five kilometers long and two kilometers wide, making walking or biking easy. Find your bathing suit and hop over to Avernakø and explore its beautiful sandy beaches.
Apple Heaven on Fejø
On the cozy island of Fejø, home to around 650 residents, you’ll find at least as many apple trees as there are people. The townscape is characterized by picturesque old houses, many thatched, and its friendly residents. The Fejø apples are particularly popular as they are grown organically and are well-known as the best fruit found in Denmark. Fejø is only 15 minutes by ferry from the mainland. Need another irresistible reason to go? The island gets around 200 hours more sun than the Danish average, so maybe that’s why its fruit tastes so good!
The Salty Island of Læsø
Læsø is said to be the feasting place of the gods, at least according to Norse mythology. For the rest of us, we can dream of Læsø with its long sandy beaches, traditional houses with seaweed roofs, and the taste of world-class salt and delicious lobster. Take a break and find yourself at Læsø spa resort, based on the salty groundwater from the wells at Rønnerne. Læsø is located 90 minutes by ferry from Frederikshavn.
The Rabbit Island: Endelave
Endelave, also known as the Rabbit Island, has been named the island of the year by Danes time and time again. This island is in the East Jutland Archipelago, and wild rabbits flourish there. With its stunning nature, hiking is the perfect way to spend time on Endelave. Take the Kanino hiking route, a humorous twist on the Danish word for rabbit, kanin, and the famous hiking route Camino.
