Iconic cycle routes: joyful and eco-friendly

You can travel without creating a huge carbon footprint. The Art Cities Route, one of Flanders’ nine iconic bicycle routes, takes you from one historic city to the next metropolis full of history and art.

The Iconic Cycle Routes take you on the road for a responsible, joyful adventure in Flanders. These nine routes unite the most beautiful elements of the Flemish landscape: sometimes completely flat, sometimes rolling, but always on lovely, safe bicycle paths. Each of these routes revolves around a central theme. The Art Cities Route is 342 km long and takes you from one historic city to the next, full of history and art. It’s a wonderful way to travel without a carbon footprint. Have an adventure in six stops at historic cities full of history, art, culture and culinary highlights.

That adventure begins in Brussels. This is not only the capital city of Europe, but also the capital of chocolate, comics and surrealism. The Art Cities Route takes you to Leuven through the green suburbs around Brussels. This is the home of KU Leuven, one of Europe’s oldest universities, which celebrates its 600th birthday in 2025. Today, Leuven seamlessly blends centuries-old heritage, Belgian Beer culture, knowledge, and youthfulness. 

Along canals and rivers and through stunning, natural surroundings, you will then make your way to Mechelen. This historic and child-friendly city is all about heritage. You’ll be able to catch your breath in the shadow of the mighty St. Rumbold’s Tower. Why not enjoy a delicious glass of Gouden Carolus, Mechelen’s finest? You’ll have earned it! The journey then leads to Antwerp. Through lush natural areas and along stunning cycle paths, you’ll land in the capital of cool, where you’ll delve into the life and work of Flemish Master Peter Paul Rubens.

Next, make your way to the Scheldt. This river winds through Flanders like a beautiful ribbon of green and blue. On your bike, you’ll discover a patchwork of nature reserves, lakes, marshes and polders. This beautiful setting will accompany you to the city of Ghent. This historic city — home to the iconic Ghent Altarpiece — effortlessly blends heritage and trendy city life. Still later, the road leads to Bruges, one of Europe’s most famous medieval cities.

The entire city center has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Park your bike and explore the cobblestone streets, winding canals and discover the iconic rooftops of the cathedral and belfry. Then, your adventure will near its end. In the final leg, you’ll cycle to Ostend, on the North Sea. An ultimate reward await there: a big pot of mussels, delicious fries, and a thirst-quenching glass of Belgian beer. Enjoy!
