Some have gained great popularity as vacation destinations, which has contributed to the surrounding areas being developed into appealing vacation destinations.

Snagov Lake
Snagov Lake is a protected nature area in the middle of the Vlăsia Forest, 39 kilometers from Bucharest. This was a strategic location for the rulers of Wallachia; its history is connected to Vlad Țepeș, also known as Dracula, the ruler of Wallachia in 1448, 1456-1462, and 1476, as his reputed burial place. On the lake’s island lies Snagov Monastery, built in 1521 by Prince Neagoe Basarab, on a church site from Vlad Țepeș’ time. This monastery is where Antim Ivireanu (1650-1716) printed the first books in the Romanian language with Latin characters.

The dam’s height is 127 meters, the highest on a Romanian river, the third highest dam in the country, and the ninth highest in Europe. In 2000, the lake was declared an aquatic nature reserve.
