A luscious treasure hunt by the sea

The North Sea coast is a diverse paradise. Among its riches are 67 kilometers of sun, sea and sand, and some astonishing highlights. Discover four delightful gems on the Flemish coast to put on your itinerary.

Westfront, an introduction to Flanders Fields

Nieuwpoort has two entirely different facets. On one hand, it’s a charming seaside resort, and on the other, it is part of the Westhoek region, which is known primarily as Flanders Fields, a significant battleground during World War I. The flicks through these dark chapters in the history of a world at war in 1914. By allowing the polders behind the Yser River to flood, it was possible to stop the German advances. Westfront tells an exciting story about the power of the water that changed the course of the Great War.

Shrimp fishermen on horseback, a taste of heritage

On the Oostduinkerke beach you can witness a unique spectacle. Sturdy draft horses stride through the surf, pulling large nets behind them, their riders wearing bright yellow wading suits. The Oostduinkerke shrimp fishermen on horseback are one of a kind. This coastal resort is the only place in the world where shrimp are still caught in the traditional manner. This ancient custom is still very much alive here, and has been on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list since 2013.

Zwin Nature Park, pristine nature

Where the Flemish coast crosses into the Netherlands lies a wonderful natural enclave Zwin Nature Park. This reserve follows the tune of the tides. Twice a day saltwater flows in from the North Sea, so the landscape is ever changing. Don’t forget to look up! After all, the Zwin is known as an “international airport” for migratory birds. For centuries, this area has been an important breeding ground and stopover on the migratory route of many bird species.

Beaufort Sculpture Park, an enormous open-air gallery

You don’t need to go to an indoor museum to enjoy some stimulating art. Every three years, the Beaufort Sculpture Park art triennial casts its anchor at the Flemish coast. On each occasion, impressive sculptures pop up along the beach of the North Sea. The Beaufort is an enduring reminder of this event, a permanent, open-air exhibition boasting more than 50 works of art along the coastline.

These are just four of the many hidden gems by the Flemish coast. Still keen to discover more? This exciting four-day excursion along the Flanders coastline has even more delights in store!
