See the best of Switzerland by rail

In Switzerland, public transport offers far more than simple convenience: Train journeys often provide one of the most captivating ways to admire the landscape. With trains, boats, and mountain railways crossing the country’s most scenic routes, the journey becomes as memorable as the destination.

The Glacier Express remains one of the most iconic Swiss rail experiences. Running between Zermatt and St. Moritz, it travels across the Swiss Alps, crossing hundreds of bridges and passing through numerous tunnels. From its panoramic windows, passengers can follow deep valleys, mountain villages, and high alpine landscapes, including the famous Landwasser Viaduct and the dramatic Rhine Gorge along the way.

Another remarkable journey is the Bernina Express, a UNESCO World Heritage railway linking Chur with Tirano in Italy. The train climbs to over 7,392 feet above sea level, passing glaciers, alpine lakes, and the famous circular viaduct at Brusio. Along the route, the landscape gradually changes from high alpine terrain to the milder atmosphere of northern Italy.

Some unique routes pair rail with water for a truly scenic adventure. Along the Gotthard Panorama Express, travelers begin aboard a historic paddle steamer on Lake Lucerne before boarding a train through the original Gotthard tunnels. Steep slopes, quaint villages, and dramatic mountain scenery unfold at every turn, offering a glimpse into Switzerland’s historic alpine crossings.

For those seeking even higher altitudes, the Jungfrau Railway climbs through the Bernese Alps to Jungfraujoch, also known as the “Top of Europe.” The train passes through tunnels carved into the Eiger and Mönch mountains before arriving at Europe’s highest railway station. Along the way, travelers can admire views of glaciers, snowfields, and the impressive alpine scenery that surrounds the Jungfrau region.

Finishing the journey through Switzerland’s most iconic railways, the Furka cogwheel railway climbs from Realp to Oberwald. Steam engines make their way up steep alpine slopes, passing historic tunnels and open meadows. Along the route, travelers can enjoy views of the Rhone Glacier and surrounding peaks, creating a scenic and memorable journey.

From historic steamers to high-alpine railways and modern panoramic trains, Switzerland’s public transport network invites travelers to slow down and discover the country through some of its most spectacular routes.
