Travel is about more than discovering new places and collecting memories. It is also an opportunity to give something back to the destinations you visit. Across Czechia, a growing number of initiatives show how tourism can help restore landscapes, protect nature, preserve cultural heritage, and support local communities. This is the essence of regenerative tourism.
Rewilding Nature at Milovice
One of Czechia's leading examples of regenerative tourism is the Milovice Reserve, where a former military training ground has been transformed into a thriving rewilding landscape. European bison, Exmoor wild horses, and Tauros cattle roam freely, naturally restoring species-rich grasslands and offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience nature's recovery firsthand.
A village brought back to life
Neratov, a small village in the Orlické Mountains, is a remarkable example of community renewal. Nearly abandoned after the Second World War, it has been brought back to life by the Neratov Association. Visitors come to admire its iconic glass-roofed church, enjoy local hospitality and regional cuisine, and support businesses that create jobs, including for people with disabilities.
Protecting nature, together
Nature restoration is also at the heart of Czechia's Bird Parks, where wetlands, meadows, and other ecosystems are being restored to provide vital habitats for endangered species. Visitors can explore these areas through nature trails, guided walks, and volunteer activities.
In Šumava National Park, the LIFE for MIRES project is restoring peat bogs and wetlands that are essential for water retention, biodiversity, and climate resilience. Visitor centers and educational trails highlight the importance of these unique ecosystems and their restoration.
Volunteer for regenerative tourism
Travelers can join one of Czechia's international volunteer workcamps, combining meaningful travel with hands-on conservation and community projects.
