How to follow football in Spain

Discover Spain through football and everyday life

Football in Spain is more than a sport — it’s part of daily life. Across the country, people gather in cafés to watch matches, wear team scarves in the streets, and spend evenings talking about football with friends and family. For visitors, it is also a wonderful way to experience local culture and connect with everyday life in Spain.

Barcelona: football and city life

In Barcelona, football is everywhere. FC Barcelona attracts fans from around the world, and Spotify Camp Nou is one of the city’s most famous landmarks. However, some of the best moments happen away from the stadium: locals discussing matches over coffee, children playing football in small squares, and friends meeting to watch games together late into the evening.

The city is also home to RCD Espanyol, which creates a strong sense of local pride and rivalry. Beyond football, visitors can wander along La Rambla, admire the Sagrada Familia, or enjoy the views from Montjuïc Park

Bilbao: a strong sense of community

Bilbao offers a different side of Spanish football. Athletic Club is deeply connected to Basque culture, and supporting the team is often a family tradition passed from one generation to the next.

Around San Mamés Stadium, matchdays bring people together to share food, conversation, and excitement. Away from football, Bilbao’s pintxos bars and relaxed atmosphere make it easy to slow down and enjoy everyday local life.

Madrid: football in every corner

Madrid lives football with passion. The rivalry between Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid fills the city with energy, especially on matchdays. Fans celebrate victories in famous squares, gather in busy cafés, and proudly wear their team colors across the city.

For travelers, football becomes part of exploring Madrid itself — from lively streets like Gran Vía to the historic Plaza Mayor

Seville: two clubs, one passion

Seville is home to two historic rivals: Real Betis and Sevilla FC. Their passion shapes the city, from celebrations at the Híspalis Fountain for Sevilla fans to Plaza Nueva, where Betis supporters gather after victories.

Football is everywhere in Seville, making it one of Spain's best cities to experience the game and its culture.

Traveling through Spain isn’t only about famous landmarks, it’s about sharing simple moments with locals — hearing football debates in a neighborhood bar, celebrating victories together, and discovering how sport becomes part of friendship, tradition, and everyday life.
