October brings a change of rhythm to Croatia. As summer slowly gives way to autumn, vineyards across the country come alive with one of the most important moments of the year: the grape harvest. It is a season of hard work, shared tables, and traditions passed down from one generation to the next, and an ideal time to discover Croatia through the people and places behind its wines.
In Istria, vineyard roads wind through rolling hills around Buje, Motovun and Vižinada, where Malvazija Istarska is the region’s signature white variety. Harvest time offers an opportunity to visit family-run wineries, meet local producers, and discover how Istria’s distinctive soil and Mediterranean climate find their way into the glass.
Closer to Zagreb, the green hills of Plešivica reveal another side of Croatian winemaking. Often compared to a natural amphitheater of vineyards, the area has developed a reputation for sparkling wines and ambitious small producers. Nearby Hrvatsko Zagorje adds historic wine roads, hilltop vineyards, and traditional cellars to a landscape particularly inviting for a leisurely early-autumn escape.
Further east, vineyards become part of the broad landscapes of Slavonia and the Croatian Danube. Around Kutjevo, Graševina has been cultivated for centuries, while the wine-growing areas of Baranja, Erdut and Ilok combine vineyards with the great rivers of eastern Croatia. In Ilok, visitors can explore historic wine cellars and taste wines grown on the slopes above the Danube, while Erdut’s vineyards occupy a striking position overlooking the river.
The journey continues south, where Dalmatian vineyards tell a different story. Here, vines grow on rocky terrain and steep slopes, under the abundant Mediterranean sun. On the Pelješac Peninsula, the indigenous Plavac Mali produces some of Croatia’s best-known red wines, particularly around Dingač and Postup, while the island of Korčula is home to Pošip and Grk, two distinctive native white varieties.
Wherever the journey leads, harvest season brings travelers closer to the origins of Croatian wine. Take part in a grape harvest where possible, walk through vineyards, talk to winemakers, and pair local wines with regional dishes. With summer crowds beginning to fade, October is a time to slow down and experience Croatia through its landscapes, flavors and living traditions.
