This small town by the river Danube bears the title of the most romantic place in Serbia. It is in the vicinity of Novi Sad and only 80 km far from Belgrade. Sremski Karlovci instantly captivates visitors with the charm of times gone by. The center, tucked in and surrounded by the majestic old edifices of the Karlovci Grammar School, the Orthodox Seminary, and the Patriarchal Court, is reminiscent of an amphitheater. Set between the slopes of Fruška Gora and the winding Danube, Karlovci, it makes you feel drawn into a tale in which time stands still. Every so often, you will see just-married couples who have vowed eternal love in this charming place as they capture their precious moment by the Four Lions fountain or in the shade of one of the oldest sycamore trees in the region.

Sremski Karlovci is well known for its magnificent Baroque architecture and unique spiritual tradition, and at Christmas time it is genuinely different from any other town in Serbia. Christmas Idyll, a festival during the holidays, takes place in December and January every year, with decorated pagodas and cozy wooden huts. It attracts visitors with the tempting fragrances and flavors of food and drinks from the region. Among the most famous specialties are kuglof, a typical local cake whose tradition is proudly kept here, as well as Bermet, the famed Karlovci dessert wine with a unique and irresistible aroma. Apart from food and drinks stands there are also handicrafts, artworks, and souvenirs produced by local artisans. The magnificence of the old town square with the festive lights and music is occasionally interrupted by the romantic chiming of bells from the many surrounding churches.

In the very center of the town there are lively restaurants where you can refuel with excellent gastronomic selections. From the center, any way you go, a new adventure is waiting.

The tradition of viticulture in the Fruška Gora region of Srem dates to the Roman period. For centuries, Karlovci has been a famous wine-producing center whose products have become world famous. You should not miss the numerous of local winemakers and taste the famous Karlovci wines. During the Christmas holidays, winemakers offer their wines in the town square, but they will also be delighted to welcome you in their cellars and entertain you with exciting wine stories.

The Christmas Idyll in Sremski Karlovci, especially when adorned with snow, brings back memories of childhood, of lovely landscapes and festive scenes from old novels and films. We invite you to come and feel the spirit of wonderful times enjoying the fragrances, tastes and ambience of this Baroque town. Dance your Christmas waltz with someone you love… and share a glass of good wine.
