Each year on January 1, the Netherlands welcomes the new year with a refreshing dip in cold water, a tradition known as the Nieuwjaarsduik or New Year’s Dive.

The main gathering takes place at Scheveningen Beach, where thousands come together around midday before heading into the North Sea. Similar events are held in coastal towns and at lakes across the country.

Dating back to the early 1960s, the tradition has become a familiar part of the Dutch winter season. Many participants wear bright orange hats and warm up afterward with hot drinks or traditional split pea soup.

Visitors can choose to take part or simply watch from the shore as the countdown begins.

The event takes place every January 1. Participation may require registration, while watching is free. Scheveningen Beach is easily accessible by tram from The Hague Central Station.
