The Torneo dei Castelli is one of San Marino’s most iconic cultural events, celebrating the Republic’s medieval heritage and local traditions. Held annually at the Cava dei Balestrieri in the historic center of San Marino, the tournament brings together representatives from the country’s nine Castelli, or districts.
Participants dressed in traditional medieval attire compete in bench crossbow shooting, a historic discipline deeply rooted in San Marino’s identity. The event is enriched by ceremonial parades, drummers, musicians, flag-wavers, and costumed performers, creating an immersive atmosphere that transports visitors back to the Middle Ages.
