The Surva International Festival of Masquerade Games, held in Pernik, is the largest event of its kind in Bulgaria and across the Balkan region. It showcases ancient Bulgarian customs that are still practiced today, forming an important part of the country’s folklore tradition. These rituals are performed by Kukeri and Survakari, who take part in the festival both as performers and competitors.
The festival takes place on the last weekend of January and is best known for its two day parade featuring masquerade groups from Bulgaria and around the world. Each year, around 6,000 participants across roughly 100 groups represent different folklore regions, along with performers from Europe, Asia and Africa.
Visitors gather in large numbers to experience the atmosphere, admire the elaborate masks and costumes, and take part in the celebrations. Many believe that touching the masks brings good luck and health. Along the parade routes and in public spaces, participants and audiences can interact freely, while additional outdoor exhibitions and performances take place throughout the town.
