Discover one of Cyprus’s most distinctive local flavors at the Kolokasi Festival in Sotira. Also known as taro root, kolokasi has been closely linked to this small town in the Kokkinochoria region for generations. Thanks to the area’s rich red soil and ideal growing conditions, Sotira now produces most of the island’s kolokasi, and “Kolokasi Sotiras” is recognized with protected European status.
The festival celebrates the vegetable’s place in local culture, cuisine, and farming traditions. Visitors can meet local growers, hear their stories, and learn how kolokasi is cultivated. Cooking demonstrations showcase traditional dishes such as kolokasi kappamas, prepared with red wine, kolokasi yachni, stewed in tomato sauce, and fried poulles, made from the smaller side corms.
Alongside classic recipes, chefs present creative new ways to enjoy this celebrated ingredient. Food, drinks, music, and a live concert bring the community together for a lively evening of Cypriot flavors and hospitality.
