In Germany, the city of Hamburg celebrates its Port Anniversary each year from May 8 to 10, commemorating a historic charter said to have been granted on May 7, 1189 by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The document reportedly gave Hamburg ships toll-free passage along the Elbe River from the city to the North Sea. Although some historians question the authenticity of the charter, Hamburg continues to celebrate this date as the symbolic birthday of its harbor.

The festivities take place around the St. Pauli Landungsbrücken along the Elbe. The program includes an opening church service at St. Michael’s Church (“Michel”), an arrival parade of ships, the traditional tugboat ballet, a colorful harbor promenade, a sea of lights for the port anniversary, and a departure parade when the ships say farewell until the following year.

The annual celebration combines events on the water and on land and attracts visitors who enjoy ships of all kinds and a lively fair-like atmosphere. Most activities take place outdoors along the waterfront and can be reached by public transportation via the Landungsbrücken station.
