One of the most popular gastronomic markets in the Basque Country, Gernika Market takes place every year in the historic centre of Gernika-Lumo, on the last Monday of October.
The true stars of the market are the baserritarras (local farmers), who showcase their produce across some 900 stalls lining central streets such as San Juan Ibarra, Paseleku, Artekale and Juan Calzada. Highlights include lively competitions across categories such as vegetables, fruit, flowers, cheeses, txakoli (local wine) and honey.
The jury evaluates the produce early in the morning, after which stallholders begin selling their goods. The awards ceremony takes place at midday, in front of the Mercury Fountain.
Alongside the market, visitors can enjoy street entertainment, parades and performances by bertsolaris, traditional Basque verse singers. While the market officially ends around 2:00 p.m., the festive atmosphere continues well into the afternoon.
